What is continuing dental education?
Under the Regulation on compulsory continuing education of dentists (Règlement sur la formation continue obligatoire des dentistes), all dentists in Quebec must attend a certain number of hours of courses, conventions, conferences or other training programs to maintain, update, improve or deepen their knowledge and skills related to the practice of their profession. In fact, a minimum of 90 continuing education units (CEUs) per three-year reference period is required for dentists.
According to the Ordre des dentistes du Québec (ODQ), continuing dental education enables dentists to enrich and broaden their knowledge and expertise, and to acquire the personal and professional qualities required throughout their careers. It also aims to develop a more patient-centred approach to the prevention of oral diseases, which goes beyond the simple treatment of existing conditions. It also seeks to ensure that dentists perfect their acquired knowledge and techniques, by implementing new advancements in the dental field.
Dental hygienists are also required to undergo a certain amount of continuing education. In fact, according to the Ordre des hygiénistes du Québec (OHDQ), 40 hours of training are required over a 2-year reference period. According to the OHDQ, mandatory continuing education enables hygienists to maintain and develop their professional competence, and is one of the means by which they can maintain, update, improve and deepen the knowledge and skills related to the practice of their profession as dental hygienists.
At Clinique dentaire Beaulieu, Lapointe et associés, our dentists and hygienists make sure that they always meet their obligations by keeping up-to-date with new developments in their field and continually developing their skills to offer patients the best possible care.
