Natural toothpastes: to avoid!

Have you ever wanted to try “natural” toothpastes? Faced with the hundreds of toothpastes available at the drugstore, it can be tempting to try these products, which are supposedly environmentally friendly and cruelty-free. However, it’s important to know that these toothpastes are rather harmful to teeth.

Abrasive ingredients: Many natural toothpastes contain silica or other abrasive agents. Over time, this can damage tooth enamel – the tooth’s protective layer.

Lack of fluoride: Fluoride is the key element for strengthening teeth and protecting them against decay. Provided it is not ingested in large quantities, brushing with fluoride toothpaste is safe for both children and adults. Natural toothpastes omit fluoride, which is a major drawback of these products.

Choosing the right toothpaste can be confusing. What’s important is to check that it contains fluoride and that it doesn’t contain abrasive elements. For guidance, you won’t go wrong by choosing a toothpaste with the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) seal, which certifies that the product is safe.
