Dental implants: Is it for me?

Dental implants: Is it for me?

Since the mid-1980s, dental implants have become widely known and used around the world. A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the missing root of a natural tooth. A crown (artificial tooth) is then attached to this implant. One or more teeth can be replaced, even complete dentitions.

Is this a good option for me?

The installation of dental implants is a surgical procedure. To determine if you are a good candidate, the bone structure of the implant site must be assessed through an oral examination and x-rays.

Procedure

The surgery to attach the implant to the edentulous site can then be performed. An implant abutment is first placed while waiting for the site to heal, which can take up to 6 months. Afterwards, the crown that will replace the abutment can be produced.

Screw-retained implant crown

The screw-retained implant crown is a crown that is fixed directly into the implant with a screw. It is screwed into the implant with a unique key associated with it. An advantage of the screw-retained crown is that it can be removed, repaired and replaced without any damage. It can also be replaced more easily if the crown is deteriorated or worn out. It is also easier to perform a professional cleaning or treatment on that site, if necessary, by removing the screw-retained crown.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants have an excellent survival rate. According to statistics, more than 95% of implants placed in the mouth are still intact after 10 years. The average lifespan of an implant is 25 years and it can remain in place for a lifetime. The lifespan of the crown, on the other hand, is shorter, like any other prosthesis. To keep the implant in good condition, it is important to maintain good dental hygiene and to have regular follow-ups with your dentist.

Dental implants offer a reliable long-term solution for missing teeth. Despite its high initial cost, a dental implant is a good investment given its lifespan.
